38 Days To Go

With just over a month to go until the night itself, the GLAM team are coming together to make the final arragements for the fashion show. The models will soon be participating in a training session with a professional, while our designers are putting the finishing touches to their clothes.
Meanwhile, we can confirm that the beauticians Beautique has agreed to have a manicure stall, adding to the wide range of stalls already organised. Audience members will now be able to peruse clothes stalls from the likes of Monkee Genes, make-up and beauty stalls, and a hand massage stall, as well as charity and FP stalls.
The Kilt Hire Company has also kindly offered to provide us with kilts for the catwalk, to be modelled by the SMC boys who visited Open Arms Malawi this summer!
As we count down the days until the big event, which we can now confirm will run from 6.30-9.45pm, we will be sure to keep you informed of all the final touches. In the mean time, tickets go on sale THIS Monday! Be sure to pick up your ticket ordering letter from the MES reception, if you do not receive one from the school.

102 Days To Go

With almost 100 days to go until the GLAM show, we are able to announce the latest sustainable designers and companies to confirm that they are willing to take part in the event.
Edinburgh College of Art graduate Laura-Jayne Nevin is kindly providing a variety of her designs for our catwalk. Her involvement means that we now have a total of 15 clothes retailers and designers lending us items for the night.
Meanwhile, former pupils will be selling FP merchandise at their own stall, bringing the total number of stalls up to 14.
We will keep you updated on any final confirmed stalls or clothes lenders. In the mean time, catering plans are progressing with mocktails and possible chocolate appetisers planned!

We are pleased to announce our first GLAM fashion event sponsor; the world's leading independent real estate consultancy, Knight Frank.Their generous sponsorship will help to cover a variety of costs, ensuring that as much of the money we make on the night goes to Open Arms Malawi as possible. We can now confirm that the renowned fashion brand People Tree have agreed to take part in our fashion show. The company, famous for its pioneering attitude towards sustainable and fair trade fashion, and its much celebrated work with the likes of Emma Watson and Livia Firth,  will be providing an assortment of pieces from their Autumn range to be modelled on our catwalk.

This incredibly exciting news comes as our team is developing ideas of how to make the night even more spectacular. We are currently looking into a live band, or possibly a DJ, to perform while our models take to the catwalk, as well as some delicious sounding catering options for any hungry audience members.

To add to the theatricality of the event, we are even looking into artificial  fire to line the entrance of the Tom Fleming Centre, and pipers to welcome the audience into the show.

There are now less than 200 days to go until the big event, and since our last update we have been approached by a great variety of ethical brands who are willing to help make the show a success.

Firstly, the ethical online market place, Run Native, has agreed to provide us with clothes for the catwalk sourced from the sustainable women's outfitter, Fox and Bhut.

Furthermore, a variety of new stallholders have now been confirmed. A stall run by a local beautician will be providing threading services and henna tattoos. JustBe Botanicals, a company which sells a completely natural range of homemade beauty products, will be running a hand massage stall.

Meanwhile, the luxury spa Beautography will be giving makeovers to customers at their stall, and Ivy Therapy, an Edinburgh salon championing natural health and beauty, will be providing manicures.

205 Days To Go

While we have been working away, organising stalls and clothes for the runway, some exciting news has reached us from Open Arms Malawi. The children of Annie's house (the building funded by Scottish singer and philanthropist Annie Lennox) are now attending the local nursery school.

For a number of weeks now, the children have taken a mini bus to school every morning, and are learning English, as well as doing artwork and other fun activities, during their lessons.
This is great news for the the children at Annie's house, who will now have access to a proper education. If we hear any more on their progress, we will be sure to keep our readers updated!

216 Days To Go

Since our last post, several more ethical brands have confirmed that they are willing to participate in the fashion show. Johari, the company which sources beautiful handmade clothes and accessories from Kenya have excitingly agreed to provide clothes for the event. As has the fairtrade Stockbridge boutique, Hibiscus Flower.

Glasgow-based Think Boutique, which works to  balance high fashion with ethical values, has also agreed to lend clothes for our runway. Our creative team has meanwhile been working closely with a group of Mary Erskine School pupils, who are designing original wearable sculptures for our models to showcase on the night.

 

In terms of the stalls that will be set up around the hall on the night, we are also making some good progress. The driving service Scoot will have a stall, as will Odyssey Boutique, the renowned lingerie and swimwear designer, who will be providing a bra fitting service in a separate room within the Tom Fleming Centre building.

240 Days To Go

Open Arms Malawi is not only a charity very dear to us, but very dear to a certain celebrity too. Annie Lennox visited their headquarters in Malawi last year and was so impressed by their work that she helped them in the purchasing of their new foster home, Annie's House. With this in mind we have contacted Annie with the below video message, in the hope that she might send us one in return to play at the show, wishing us luck and stating her passion for the charity.

As we get closer to the Glam event itself, more companies have been able to confirm their involvement in the show, and so we are now able to relay that information to you, our readers. Firstly, the fabulous Monkee Genes will be providing a selection of their fashion-forward and eco-friendly jeans for our catwalk.
Rapanui Clothing, the Isle of Wight eco-fashion brand, has also agreed to provide some of their gorgeous organic clothes to be modelled on the night.

Two of the first stalls that will line the walls of the Tom Fleming Centre at the event can also be announced. Boddy Language, the healthy lifestyle  coaching service, will be providing a posture workshop at their stall.

Meanwhile, Eilidh Ellery of [Do Not] Feed The Animals, who designs her clothes from, "allergy and food intolerance friendly textiles", will be running a stall as well as providing clothes for the catwalk.

Today we can officially announce the fantastic news that our show will be hosted by well-known Scottish radio personality and eco campaigner, Heather Suttie. Heather is the perfect person for the job, having hosted shows on Xfm Scotland and Beat 106 radio, as well as having over 1000 hours live TV experience.
In addition, Heather is passionate about our cause herself, having worked with the likes of Ecomunky and the Daily Record on environmental projects.
It is therefore safe to say that the audience will be in good hands with her guiding them through the night.

Today we can officially unveil the brilliant logo, designed by members of our events and marketing teams, for our GLAM fashion show.

We will be using this logo as an advertising tool to represent and promote the event in the future. So look out for the GLAM sign!

It is now 2013, the year of our fashion show, and we have some more exciting developments to announce.

The female models taking part in the show have now been announced. They will begin rehearsing for the big night, and attending fittings for the clothes our designers are creating, in the coming months. The name of one of these models is perhaps already familiar to you. Lynsey Sharp, Olympic athlete and esteemed former pupil, has kindly agreed to participate, and it is an honour to know that some of the clothes we create and collate will be modelled by one of Scotland's top athletes on the night.

Our models will not only be showcasing the very best of ethical clothing on the night, but the very best hairstyles too. This is thanks to Charlie Miller making the generous offer to style every models hair at the event. This is great news, and we are very excited to work with them, as well as to see the hairdos they create!

299 Days To Go

Shockingly, there are around 1,000,000 orphans in Malawi, an African country with a population of approximately 15 million. This is why Open Arms was established, a charity which aims to support orphaned and abandoned children in Malawi. The charity does not refer to their homes as orphanages, as their main aim is to build the strength of the babies and try to reintroduce them into the community, mainly by placing them with relatives. However, it is not always possible for the children to return to their villages, and so Open Arms has recently started it's new project of creating foster homes and surrogate families for the children (aged 6+) who have nowhere to go.

We are hoping that with the money raised from the Ethical Fashion Event, we can raise a significant amount of money that will help to fund these houses and families, providing a safe, loving environment for the children to grow up in. Not only are the children provided with shelter and care, they also attend a local school and even go on holidays, giving them an opportunity to have a real family life.

We believe that the work of Open Arms Malawi is invaluable, and it is for that reason that we are delighted to be donating all our profits to this charity.

With just over 300 days to go until the big event, we can now reveal our first set of confirmed fashion brands and designers lending us ethical clothes. We are pleased to announce that the sports clothing line 'Sweaty Betty" are keen to get involved and let us borrow some of their pieces for the event. As are the people at the much celebrated ethical fashion company, Komodo. Added to the list of clothing you will be seeing on the catwalk if you attend the event, are the designs of the very talented Rachel Scott and Rowan Joy. Furthermore, the outfits customised by our own designers are coming along nicely. We will keep you updated on other confirmed participants shortly.

304 Days To Go

On Sunday, 4th of November, some of the participants of the fashion show went along to gain some ideas from a similar event. This event was the 'Sparkle and Shine Fashion Show', organised by the charity 'Its good 2 give'. The event was executed precisely, and was really fantastic to watch. With Grant Stott being the celebrity host, and 3 girls who had previously benefited from the charities work helping him along, the show was both entertaining and very humbling. Some of the models, presenters and organisers, as well as a few nurses all took to the stage to give short account of how'Its good 2 give' helped them. This really helped you to see how beneficial this charity was, and ESMS sustainable fashion show would love to do something similar, to let people know about the work of our chosen organisation, GLAM. The show modelled clothes from boutiques around Edinburgh, which all provided beautiful clothes. All those who attended loved watching the show, and were also very very happy to support this worth while and very impressive charity.

305 Days To Go

This Wednesday the finance team will begin whittling down the 30 finalists to the 16 models who will walk the runway on the night of the show. The ultimate goal is to find both teenage girls and boys who will wear the clothes with pride, and create a fun and exciting atmosphere for the audience. Contenders will be expected to walk for the finance directors, both with and without heeled shoes, before answering a few questions on why they want to take part, and will be rewarded for good posture and confidence.

The results should be out before Christmas, and we will keep you updated on them, as well as any other exciting developments that occur.

331 days to go

Recent meetings have seen exciting progress being made in all areas of our event. We have begun the process of model recruitment for the night, and are spoilt for choice with candidates. We have also started to generate a fair amount of interest from ethical brands willing to lend us clothes and have now started contacting more specialist ethical clothing suppliers, selling products such as bridal wear and kilts.

Many members of the team have been to see a number of fashion shows around Edinburgh of late, including one held in the Tom Fleming Centre itself. These shows have given us plenty of ideas about the style of catwalk we should use, and tips on how best to utilise the space in the room, to allow for a larger audience and the maximum number of stalls.

Finally, after much thought on where we should donate the money from the event, we have settled on the Stewart’s Melville College project GLAM, which allows students at the school to visit communities in Malawi and support the work there in a variety of ways. This is an excellent cause and makes buying a ticket for the event all the more worthwhile!

348 days to go

We can now confirm that the venue for the show will be the Tom Fleming Centre at Stewart’s Melville College in Edinburgh. The hall is an ideal place to hold the event, having held many similar and incredibly successful occasions in the past. The Event Management team are now also looking into using the balcony space in the hall as an area for setting up stalls from a variety of companies, either selling products or providing a service, with a link to fashion, beauty or sustainability. This will add a new dimension to the show, making it more than just a catwalk.

On the 15th September, the majority of our fashion show helpers attended the Pout Fashion Event at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange. We all thoroughly enjoyed getting our photos taken at the Pout of the Weekend photo stand and it was great to see how they turned out on Pout Event's Facebook page! We were ecstatic with our fantastic goodie bags and sitting down to watch the Debenhams fashion show was a great way of getting an idea of what we want our event to be like. After the show, we were all told by the stylist what type of flowers we were, this being a new, flattering way of expressing body shape. There were plenty of fabulous stalls and definitely something for everyone! Some of us ate ice creams from the Luca's stall or even got our make up done at Edinburgh Beautography's stand. Edinburgh Natural Skincare Company had a stall at the event and when we told them about our event next year, they seemed keen to attend and have a stall there too! We had a lovely girly afternoon and it was great to experience the atmosphere of a professional fashion event and to get an idea of what to aim towards. We have our second meeting next week and we hope to make planning progress!

On the 4th of October 2013 a sustainable fashion show will be taking place at the Erskine Stewart’s Melville Schools, displaying a range of high quality outfits. Clothes will be sourced from a variety of eco-friendly brands, borrowed from well-known personalities or created/customised by our own designers. The event should showcase the very best in sustainable fashion, and prove to be a successful and exciting night. This blog will keep you updated on all that is going on in the months leading up to it, as well informing you nearer the time about how you can attend. We will keep you posted.
